1. Official Mandate, Scope & Background

The District Magistrate (DM), also designated as District Collector or Deputy Commissioner, is the administrative head of a revenue district in India. An Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer or senior promoted State Civil Service (PCS) officer, the DM exercises statutory powers under CrPC for executive law and order, disaster relief, land revenue, and development administration.

2. Eligibility Criteria, Qualifications & Age Limits

Must clear the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) and be allocated to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), or be promoted from State Civil Services (Executive branch) after prescribed years of gazetted service.

3. Examination Scheme & Selection Procedure

UPSC CSE: Stage 1 (Civil Services Prelims), Stage 2 (Civil Services Mains - 9 descriptive papers), Stage 3 (Personality Test / Interview) followed by 2-year institutional and field training at LBSNAA Mussoorie.
