1. Official Mandate, Scope & Background
The Engineering Services Examination (ESE), also popularly called Indian Engineering Services (IES), is conducted annually by UPSC to recruit Class-I Gazetted engineers for the Indian Railway Service of Engineers, Central Engineering Service, Central Water Engineering, and Military Engineer Services.
2. Eligibility Criteria, Qualifications & Age Limits
Degree in Engineering (B.E. / B.Tech) in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or Electronics & Telecommunication disciplines from a recognized university. Age Limit: 21 to 30 years as of 1st January of the examination year.
3. Examination Scheme & Selection Procedure
Stage 1: Preliminary Objective Examination (Paper I: General Studies & Engineering Aptitude; Paper II: Discipline Engineering - 500 Marks). Stage 2: Mains Conventional Written Examination (Two descriptive papers - 600 Marks). Stage 3: Personality Test / Interview (200 Marks).
4. Core Syllabus & Key Subjects
General Studies (Current issues, Engineering Ethics, Project Management, Environmental Studies, ICT) plus advanced undergraduate core discipline engineering concepts and design problem calculations.
