1. Official Mandate, Scope & Background

IFS refers either to the Indian Foreign Service (Central Civil Service Group A managing diplomatic relations) or the Indian Forest Service (All India Service managing forest ecosystems and wildlife sanctuaries).

2. Eligibility Criteria, Qualifications & Age Limits

Foreign Service: Graduation in any discipline; age 21 to 32. Forest Service: Bachelor's degree with at least one subject among Animal Husbandry, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Zoology, Agriculture or Forestry.

3. Examination Scheme & Selection Procedure

Both cadres share the common UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination for screening. Foreign Service proceeds through Civil Services Mains; Forest Service candidates appear for the dedicated Indian Forest Service Mains written exam.

4. Core Syllabus & Key Subjects

Forest Service Mains: General English, General Knowledge, and two optional subjects chosen from prescribed scientific disciplines (Forestry, Agriculture, Geology, Botany, Zoology).
