1. Official Mandate, Scope & Background

The Indian Police Service (IPS) is one of the three All India Services constituted under Article 312 of the Constitution. Cadre-controlled by the Ministry of Home Affairs, IPS officers provide leadership to State Police forces, Central Armed Police Forces, Intelligence Bureau, and RAW.

2. Eligibility Criteria, Qualifications & Age Limits

Graduation degree in any discipline. Age: 21 to 32 years (General). Physical Standards: Minimum height 165 cm for men (150 cm for women); chest girth 84 cm with 5 cm expansion; visual acuity 6/6 or 6/9 in better eye.

3. Examination Scheme & Selection Procedure

Recruited through the UPSC Civil Services Examination (Prelims, Mains, and Interview) followed by specialized foundation and police training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) Hyderabad.

4. Core Syllabus & Key Subjects

Identical to UPSC Civil Services Examination curriculum with subsequent post-selection training in Criminal Procedure Code, Indian Penal Code, Evidence Act, Forensics, and Internal Security management.
