DGP is an officer of the Indian Police Service (IPS) holding a 3-star rank wearing national emblem over crossed sword and baton, serving in the apex pay scale (Level 17 / Level 16 of the 7th CPC).

Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Additional Director General rank with minimum 30 years of meritorious service, empanelled by UPSC following Prakash Singh judgment guidelines.

State government sends list of senior-most eligible IPS officers to UPSC; UPSC committee shortlists panel of three officers based on service records; State Government appoints DGP from this panel for a minimum fixed tenure of 2 years.
