1. Official Mandate, Scope & Background
The Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) is the premier foreign intelligence agency of India founded in September 1968 under the leadership of Rameshwar Nath Kao. Operating under the direct executive authority of the Prime Minister's Office through the Cabinet Secretariat, it monitors external strategic intelligence, counter-espionage, and foreign security interests.
2. Eligibility Criteria, Qualifications & Age Limits
Officers are inducted primarily on deputation from All India Services (IAS, IPS), Central Civil Services (IRS, Postal Service), and the Armed Forces through the Research and Analysis Service (RAS) cadre, or through specialized lateral direct recruitment via UPSC / Cabinet Secretariat.
3. Examination Scheme & Selection Procedure
Rigorous multi-stage background vetting, Intelligence psychological assessments, written aptitude examinations, and intensive operational tradecraft training at national intelligence training centers.

Geopolitics, Strategic Security, Foreign Languages, Cyber Counter-Intelligence, Military Doctrines, Cryptography, and International Diplomatic Relations.
